Satellite AIS show icebreakers stuck in Antarctica

Exact Earth has published an impressive overview of the events happening in Antarctica around the research and cruise vessel Akademik Shokalskiy. On 25th of december the russian vessel got stuck in the thick ice in Commonwealth-bay. The Chinese icebreaker Xue Long which came for assistance got also stuck only 6 nautical miles from the Akademik Shokalskiy. ExactEarth’s space-based AIS (Automatic Identification System) detection technology enables to keep track of vessels all around the globe, even the arctic regions.
