Norway builds more cheap AIS Satellites on their own.

SpaceNews reports that Norway will launch two small, cheap AIS satellites in the near future.

This is good and bad news for Orbcomm and Exact Earth. Good news, because it shows that there is value in the technology, that it works and that countries with long coastlines are willing to invest in the technology. It is bad news, because it seems that it is cheap to get a up and maintain own infrastructure with micro or nano satellites.

Mark Deverill (Lloyd’s List Intelligence) @ AIS Summit 2013

Mark Deverill from Lloyd’s List Intelligence talks about “Experiences of AIS Data” at AIS Summit 2013. He presented a compilation of different AIS data quality meassures and showed the results of his investigation into several AIS data oddities.

With his talk about the quality of AIS data Mark Deverill won the best presentation award of the conference.

Second Norwegian AIS Satellite delayed, again.

The mid Decmeber 2013 launch of the second Norwegian AIS Satellite AISSat 2 has been postponed again. Norwegians AISSat 2 is supposed to be lifted into space by a Russian Soyuz/Fregat rocket. The nano satellite (size: 200mm x 200mm x 200mm) is secondary payload to the larger Russian meteorological satellite Meteor-M2. Meteor-M2 delivery seems problematic. It had already suffered from several delays in the past causing its secondary payload to be delayed as well.

AISSat 2 was ordered in January 2011 with a planned launch early 2012. With the mid-December launch being delayed again, AISSat suffers from an overall delay of nearly 2 years.
